Centered on the Charlotte Rail Trail as it parallels the light rail line between roughly the Scaleybark and East/West stations, flanked by South Boulevard and the streets just east and west of it.
The Rail Trail Core is the version of South End most visitors picture: a landscaped path lined with murals, public art, breweries, and patios, running alongside the light rail tracks. On weekends the trail carries a steady stream of runners, cyclists, dog walkers, and bar-hoppers, and it has become the connective tissue linking the neighborhood's disparate pockets.
Development here has been the most aggressive in South End, with mid-rise and high-rise apartment and condo buildings replacing older industrial parcels over the past fifteen years. Ground-floor retail is a requirement in most new construction, which has produced a dense concentration of restaurants, breweries, and fitness studios within a few blocks of the trail.
Because so much of the district's nightlife and dining is concentrated here, the Rail Trail Core can feel more like a downtown entertainment district than a residential neighborhood on Friday and Saturday nights. Noise and crowds are a real consideration for anyone considering a unit directly facing the trail or South Boulevard.
The light rail's Scaleybark and New Bern stations bookend this stretch, making it one of the more transit-oriented pieces of South End, and infill construction continues to close remaining gaps between buildings.
