Why concrete and steel change the plan
South End's residential towers are largely concrete-and-steel construction, and converted mill lofts carry heavy masonry and timber framing — both of which behave very differently from wood-frame construction when it comes to running wire, mounting equipment, and getting a wireless signal to travel where it's needed.
Concrete floor and ceiling slabs block wireless signal far more aggressively than drywall and studs, meaning a single router in a great room often can't reliably reach a bedroom or office on the far side of a unit. Masonry walls in lofts create similar dead zones, just with a different structural cause.
