Named for the historic Atherton Mill complex on South Boulevard, roughly between the Rail Trail Core and Camden Road, near the New Bern light rail station.

Atherton takes its name from the Atherton Cotton Mill, a former textile mill converted into a mixed retail and market space that anchors this stretch of South Boulevard. The mill building's brick façade and sawtooth roofline are among the more recognizable pieces of industrial architecture preserved in South End's redevelopment.

Around the mill, the immediate blocks have filled in with apartment and condo buildings that use the historic structure as a marketing touchpoint, emphasizing walkability to its shops and food stalls. The area functions as a small-scale, self-contained node rather than a sprawling district.

Its proximity to the New Bern light rail station and the Rail Trail Core means Atherton benefits from foot traffic generated by both, even though its own footprint is modest — really just the mill and the buildings immediately surrounding it.

Because the mill building itself is a fixed historic structure, redevelopment pressure here has focused on adjacent parcels rather than the mill, giving this pocket more architectural continuity than some of South End's newer construction zones.
